New · Backup regions

Choose where your WordPress backups are stored.

Pick one of 10 regions for each site when you add it. The region locks after the first backup, so your backup chain stays intact.

Why location matters

A backup is a full copy of your site, including its personal data.

Customer records, orders, form submissions and user accounts all end up in the backup. Which country that copy sits in can matter. Now you can answer that question for each site.

Clients

Clients ask where data goes

Tell them which region their backups are stored in, without having to look it up.

Contracts

Contracts that name a country

If an agency agreement names a storage location, set that region for the site.

Policy

Some teams just want to know

The site’s detail page shows which region it uses.

Choosing a region does not, on its own, make your setup compliant with any law. Location is one part of the picture. How backup regions work →

How it works

Choose the region before the first backup runs.

  1. 01 Editable

Pick it when you add a site

The Add site form has a Backup region field. Choose where this site’s backups go.

  2. 02 Visible

    See it afterwards

The site’s detail page shows which region its backups use.

  3. 03 Paused

    Frozen during a backup

A backup that’s running is already writing to one region, so the field can’t change.

  4. 04 Locked

    Locked after the first backup

After the first successful backup, the region stays fixed. The page shows when it locked.

Try it: the field through a first backup

Editable

You can change this until the first successful backup.

Why it locks: backups are chained

Each incremental backup depends on the one before it. Moving the chain halfway would break it.

Locked · AMS3

Deleting backups does not unlock the region. If a locked site has to move, add it again as a new site and pick the region you want; the archives already written stay where they are.
