Managing your subscription: buying, upgrading and changing period

Buying a plan with or without an account, moving to a bigger or smaller plan, switching between monthly and annual, adding extra backup space, and the three things that are still done by writing to us.

Buying a plan, moving to a bigger one, adding backup space, switching between monthly and annual: all of it starts on the same screen, and all of it goes through the same checkout. This page walks through each of those, and through the one part that is not self-service yet.

Buying a plan

Open the pricing page, choose Monthly or Annually with the switch above the cards, and press the button on the plan you want. Checkout opens in a panel over the page; you confirm the Distance Sales Agreement before it will open, enter your details, and pay.

You do not have to be signed in. If you are, the subscription is attached to your account immediately and your e-mail address is filled in for you. If you are not, you type an e-mail address at checkout and we match it afterwards:

  • the address already belongs to a WP Safer account — the subscription goes to that account;
  • it does not — an account is created for it, and a link to set a password is e-mailed to that address. The link is good for seven days.

Pay with the address you sign in with. A different address is not an error we can see: it is a new account with the plan on it, and your old account stays on Free. If it has already happened, write to info@wpsafer.com and we will move it.

When the payment goes through you land on a receipt page with the subscription id, the amount and the next payment date, and the same details arrive by e-mail. The plan is usable at that moment — there is nothing to activate.

Moving to a bigger plan

An upgrade is a purchase, not a setting: go back to the pricing page and buy the bigger plan. The larger site allowance is live as soon as the payment is recorded, so you do not lose a day.

Then ask us to cancel the old subscription — write to info@wpsafer.com. This part matters, because subscriptions add up rather than replace each other: leave the old one running and you will be paying for both, every period, and your allowance will be the two added together. Cancelling it stops the next charge while the period you already paid for runs to its end.

There is no proration on either side. The new plan is charged in full from today, and the old one is not refunded for the days left in its period — which is why doing both in the same sitting is worth the two minutes.

Moving to a smaller plan

Same shape, other direction, and the order is the opposite: buy the smaller plan first only if you need it immediately, otherwise simply ask us to cancel the current one and buy the smaller plan when the paid period ends. You keep everything you paid for until that date, and you avoid paying twice over the overlap.

Nothing is deleted when the allowance drops. Sites above the new limit keep running, keep being backed up and keep their backups; you just cannot connect new ones until the allowance rises again. Features that belong to the higher plan stop — checks slow down, groups and bulk actions and automatic updates go quiet on Free — and come back the moment a plan covers them again.

Monthly to annual, or back

The billing period is part of the product you bought, so changing it works exactly like changing plan: buy the plan again with the other period selected and ask us to cancel the old subscription. Annual is a single payment for twelve months and costs less than twelve monthly ones on every paid plan.

One feature depends on the period rather than the plan: the self-service migration wizard needs an active subscription with a period of at least twelve months. On monthly billing the wizard stays closed and the pricing page points at our paid migration service instead.

Extra backup space

Backup space can be bought without touching your plan. The storage packs — 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB — sit further down the pricing page and are added on top of your plan's space as soon as the payment is recorded. Your site allowance does not change.

Packs are separate subscriptions with their own renewal date, and they can be cancelled on their own, leaving the plan alone. You have to be signed in to buy one, because a pack only makes sense on top of a plan that already exists. They appear in Orders like any other purchase, with the pack size in the place where a plan shows its site count.

What is not self-service yet

Two things are done by writing to us rather than by pressing a button in the panel: cancelling a subscription and closing an account. The address is info@wpsafer.com — write from the address your account signs in with, and say which subscription you mean if you have more than one.

A third one is not ours to do at all: the card a subscription is charged to is held by Polar, our payment provider, and never by WP Safer. Payments, receipts and failed charges explains how to change it.

Cancelling has its own page, because what happens afterwards is worth reading before you do it: cancelling, and what happens to your sites and backups.
